Official Written Standard of the Chow Chow

Approved October 10, 2005 Effective January 1, 2006

Chows are powerful, compactly built dogs. Their distinctive traits include a lion’s-mane ruff around the head and shoulders; a blue-black tongue; deep-set almond eyes that add to a scowling, a snobbish expression; and a stiff-legged gait. Chows can have rough or smooth coats in red, black, blue, cinnamon, or cream.

  • Group: Non-Sporting Group
An admendment to the written standard was recently approved by the AKC. This document attached to this web page will be changed once the AKC changes their document. The admendment will be as follows:
 
The “Coloring” description in the AKC Chow Chow breed standard shall now be:

"The “Coloring” description in the AKC Chow Chow breed standard shall be: Color: Clear colored, solid or solid with lighter shadings in the ruff, tail, and featherings. There are five colors in the Chow: red (light golden to deep mahogany), black, blue, cinnamon (light fawn to deep cinnamon) and cream. Reds, Blacks, and Cinnamons must have a solid black nose. Blue chows may have a solid blue or slate nose. Cream chows may have a range of nose color, from dark black/brown solid pigment, fading to pinkish pigment, with or without darker nose rim pigment at the outer edge, as puppies or adults; all of which are equally correct. Acceptable colors to be judged on an equal basis.
